After research regarding mobile/portable platforms I have found that it is a huge contributing factor to the increase in indie games popularity.
People need only look as far as Angry Birds to uncover the impact this section of the market has, particularly the iPhone/Android mobile devices. Angry Birds has sold over 200 million copies and has had over 350 million downloads to date.
An interesting article I found during my research on IGN outlines that Angry Birds is on the verge of overtaking Mario games total sales. Considering the small space of time this has been achieved in, it is extremely impressive.

This in conjunction with the earlier research done earlier in the workflow of the project is evidence enough to show that this area of the games industry is thriving and in-turn is bolstering the impact and growth of the indie market.
