When researching industry backed funding schemes I adopted a range of interesting facts and information to help support my project.
The most notable industry backed funding scheme is ‘Indie Fund’. This is a funding source for independent developers. This is comprised of a mix of people who have found success in the indie market and have created a scheme to help others strengthen the market.
Below is a list of people involved in the Indie Fund:
- Jonathan Blow - Creator of Braid (XBLA / PSN / PC), founder of the Experimental Gameplay Workshop, currently working on The Witness.
- Ron Carmel – Co-Founder of 2D BOY and co-creator of World of Goo (WiiWare / PC), currently working on unannounced project.
- Kyle Gabler – Co-Founder of 2D BOY and co-creator of World of Goo (WiiWare / PC), Co-Founder of the Experimental Gameplay Project, currently working on unannounced project as part of Tomorrow Corporation.
- Aaron Isaksen – Co-Founder of AppAbove Games and co-creator of Cadena de Presos and Armadillo Gold Rush (BREW / J2ME / Blackberry), currently working on Rocket Blocks and unannounced project.
- Kellee Santiago – Co-Founder and President of thatgamecompany: flOw (PSN), flOwer (PSN), currently working on Journey.
- Nathan Vella – Founder and President of Capy, responsible for Critter Crunch (PSN / iPhone), Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes (DS/XBLA/PSN), currently working on a handful of games, including Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP.
- Matthew Wegner – Founder of Flashbang Studios (Off-Road Raptor Safari, Blurst), Independent Games Festival co-chair, Independent Games Summit Advisor, TIGRadio host, Fun-Motion editor. Currently working on unannounced project.
The Indie Fund offers a flexible budget with no milestones and gives the studio creative control and funding for their project in the hope that money from the title will provide funding for the next.
The scheme allows studios to pay the funding back after the release of the title over a 3 year period. If the title makes an in-sufficient amount of money after this timeframe, the contract expires and no more money is owed.
In return the Indie fund will take a small percentage of the revenue made from the title.
Titles funded to date are:
- · Dear Esther
- · Faraway
- · Monaco
- · Q.U.B.E
