Innovative Games Research

The foundation of most indie titles is innovation.  After researching how innovation has played a part in the rise of indie titles, I have developed a list of games that demonstrate this by thinking outside of the box.

Firstly is a game called ‘Bohm’ and was created by Monobanda.   This game is more of an experience than a title and it allows the player to influence the growth and life of a tree.  This is something completely new and simple, which ties in with both core elements that indie games are often comprised of.

It also features dynamic music which evolves with the tree itself to create a truly innovative and immersive experience.

The next game is B.U.T.T.O.N (Brutally Unfair Tactics Totally OK Now) by Copenhagen Game Collective.  This game again was designed with a new and fresh idea focusing on rules and fair, or for that matter un-fair play.
In essence the game focuses of social gaming and requires the players to take part in a series of mini-games.  These mini-games involve the players standing a certain distance from the controllers and racing to press theirs or their opponent’s buttons.

Echochrome 2 is next on the list.  It features a simple looking art style and combines it with a complex and innovative gameplay style.  The player must break the 3rd dimension and traverse a level from start to finish.  Each level is short and puzzle based.  This keeps the gameplay addictive and lets the player play for short bursts.
